The origins of Norfolk State University trace back to 1935, when it was then known as the Norfolk Division of Virginia Union University—a private Baptist institution with just 85 students. In 1942, it became the independent Norfolk Polytechnic College, then Norfolk State College in 1969 and finally gaining university status and its current name—Norfolk State University, in 1975.
